Risperdal

Risperdal is a medication that is commonly used to treat autism, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in Texan children. In recent months, a number of Risperdal lawsuits have been filed, because this drug produced unusual side effects that can sometimes be more harmful than the conditions it treats.

Risperdal Dangers

Risperdal can produce a number of side effects, ranging from moderate to severe. A few of the more serious side effects include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Weight gain
  • Extreme dizziness
  • Frequent severe headaches
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Risperdal gynecomastia, which involves male patients growing breast tissue

Risperidone can increase one’s odds of developing diabetes, although doctors are uncertain as to why. The effects on a developing fetus have not yet been evaluated, so women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the near future should forego taking this medication.

Risperidone Drug Interactions

Risperdal can also react negatively with a number of other medications, including:

  • Clozapine
  • Paroxentine
  • Sertraline
  • Fluoxentine
  • Diflucan
  • Ketoconzaole
  • Irtraconazole

As such, patients who are taking any of the above medications should speak with their physician about the possible side effects before taking Risperdal.

Houston Class Action Lawsuits

A number of class action lawsuits have been filed against the maker of Risperdal, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Among the allegations are charges that the company downplayed the risks associated with this drug and used deceptive practices in marketing it. Janssen Pharmaceuticals is also accused of promoting the drug for off-label use, and encouraging the over-medication of children. As such, parents of children who have suffered ill effects from using Risperdal could be entitled to compensation in a court of law.
